Cerulean Spork
I love, love LOVE the fact that even the staves are red—color production design in amazing detail, and another piece of bilingual symbolism, red in western art is usually ominous & menacing (see also, “Wedding, Red”) because of the blood/fire connection….but eastern visual symbolism reverses that symbol, instead of spilled blood and uncontrolled fire, it’s a pulse, it’s life, it’s warmth and shelter and all the things you need to be safe and happy.
So there was danger, here, walking into this place of violence (red in western connotation) but it’s CONTROLLED violence, as Stacker reminds Mako (we will get back to that another time) it’s about learning, not brutalizing (it’s about COMMUNICATION, which is not possible outside w the Kaiju) and so there was also inevitable hope, a promise of life, health, & renewal implicit in all the red, the wall graphics, the red edge of the mats, the rusting industrial metal (it becomes beautiful here, too!) and their very weapons….
In China, ALL weddings are red, and so is the New Year, which in the PR timeline is only a few days’ away from the climactic events of the film.
ETA: forgot to add, the whole point of this and the previous piece! This is where he begins to recover, THIS is the moment when Raleigh decides to live again, this is the place of healing, for him….and it’s all bc of Mako being willing to reach out to him, and also being willing to treat HIM with respect even though she is majorly pissed off at him for giving up and being an undisciplined screwup, because she’s SO MUCH her father’s daughter…but she’s willing to LISTEN to her father and emulate his dispassion, too, and bc of that she’s able to connect and MAKE HIM TRUST HER even tho she’s beating him like a rug.
He’s turned on at the end of the duel like everybody jokes bc he KNOWS she won’t hurt him, even if they’re both covered with bruises tomorrow.
(Yeah, they didn’t just put a Metaphorical Public Sex Scene in a PG-13 movie that I wouldn’t be embarrassed or afraid to take a 10-yr-old to, and get away with it, they put an Allegorical Metaphorical BDSM Scene that follows the “Safe, Sane, Consensual” playbook in a mainstream skiffy flick. I can’t stop laughing…)
